Thursday was the day Anthony Davis became eligible to sign an extension with the Washington Wizards…and was also the day we learned he won’t do so, at least for a while.

Per Josh Robbins of The Athletic, ‘any meaningful talks between Davis and the Wizards about a possible extension will occur during the 2026-27 season, not before.’

Robbins opined that the Wizards and Davis seem to be on good terms, using Davis’ appearance at the team’s optional veteran minicamp during Summer League as a baseline, and wonders if, as The Junkies posited Friday morning, this is more of a ‘wait-and-see’ approach to see how Davis fits the team.

“The decision to hold off on substantive talks until the season could stem in part from both parties needing to learn more about each other — questions that perhaps can only be answered after Davis and the team have played a large enough sample size of regular-season games,” Robbins wrote.

Davis has sent mixed messages about his future in DC, and now, it seems as if his long-term future won’t be decided until at least next summer – when he also has a player option worth nearly $63 million for 2027-28 to decide on as well.
