The NFL trade deadline came and went Tuesday and the Redskins were unable to free themselves of disgruntled left tackle Trent Williams.
But there was still one twist still to come in this saga: Williams had ended his holdout and reported to Redskins Park minutes after the deadline passed.
Follow along the waves of emotion throughout this roller-coaster of an afternoon.
First thing Tuesday morning, reports emerged that the Redskins were engaged in trade talks with the Browns over Williams, but the two sides remained far apart in terms of the return. The Redskins were said to be asking for a first-round pick and/or second-year corner Denzel Ward in return, while the Browns were thinking more along the lines of a couple mid-round picks and call it a day.
Ward was the fourth-overall pick in 2018 and made the Pro Bowl his rookie season, a young, controllable asset the Browns would be crazy to give up.
Continue to hear the Redskins want a 1 for Trent Williams and the Browns aren’t willing to give up that much. Think CLE more in the range of multiple mid-rounders. Will see if deadline changes things.
— Jeremy Fowler (@JFowlerESPN) October 29, 2019Part of issue is age (31) and hasn’t practiced in months. Great player, but those are factors for teams. RT @JFowlerESPN: Continue to hear the Redskins want a 1 for Trent Williams and the Browns aren’t willing to give up that much.
— Jeremy Fowler (@JFowlerESPN) October 29, 2019The #Redskins are now open to dealing LT Trent Williams, but they aren’t just asking for draft picks. I’m told they are big-game hunting, asking for players like CB Denzel Ward in return. Which… is a non-starter.
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) October 29, 2019Details about a potential Redskins-Brown deal then began trickle out throughout the afternoon leading up to Tuesday's 4 p.m. deadline:
From the beginning, Washington's handling of the Trent Williams situation screams poor management. Why limit yourself to a 48 hour trade period when you obviously could have received so much more compensation early in the process? #Redskins(See Laremy Tunsil)
— Dianna (@diannaESPN) October 29, 2019The Redskins haven't altered their stance on trading tackle Trent Williams: In order to move him, a team will have to meet their price. And, entering today, that price was a first-rounder - or somehow a package that gave them a playmaker to help the... https://t.co/RxfLzMPsUv
— John Keim (@john_keim) October 29, 2019Belief by some is Trent Williams could be game ready in two weeks.
— Tom Withers (@twithersAP) October 29, 2019As of this am a source says t/ #Browns discussed some concerns at including 1st-round compensation for a LT Trent Williams who's 31 & has not recently practiced w/an NFL team. They said, ”What if he gets hurt?" Injuries can happen to anyone, anytime; including ur nxt 1st-rounder.
— ig: josinaanderson (@JosinaAnderson) October 29, 2019I'm told the stare down continues between the #Browns and the #Redskins regarding LT Trent Williams. A source just text me, "the Skins are still holding firm on what they want in return." Browns GM John Dorsey not bending, at this minute.
— ig: josinaanderson (@JosinaAnderson) October 29, 2019Latest before 4 pm trade deadline:* Told that a team made Redskins an offer for RB Adrian Peterson. Offer deemed not viable.* Whatever happens with Redskins and Trent Williams, the two sides haven't communicated recently, per source.* Source on Denzel Ward: "No chance."
— Ben Standig (@BenStandig) October 29, 2019#Redskins asking for big-name players such as #Browns CB Denzel Ward as part of package for LT Trent Williams, per @RapSheet https://t.co/g1XXn0k9Fv
— Mary Kay Cabot (@MaryKayCabot) October 29, 2019One note on Trent Williams: A holdout player who doesn't report before the trade deadline would have to be formally reinstated by the commissioner's office at the team's request in order to play this year. May not matter, he doesn't want to play for Wash anyway. But noteworthy.
— Dan Graziano (@DanGrazianoESPN) October 29, 2019The one quote that stands out talking with league sources on possible Trent Williams move - Redskins wouldn’t take calls on a trade for months, “nobody wants to bail them out now.”
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) October 29, 2019As far as public mockery goes, the Redskins were getting dunked on left and right for their reported ask of Ward.
The #Redskins really fooled themselves waiting this long to trade Trent Williams and are now being naive about the price for him while also having minimal leverage.
— Jordan Reid (@JReidNFL) October 29, 2019If I'm the Browns, I offer a second-round pick for Trent Williams and close the negotiations after that. Seems like it should be a pretty clear cut situation.
— Ben Axelrod (@BenAxelrod) October 29, 2019TRADE TRENT WILLIAMS YOU REMORONS @Redskins
— Nate Blogg (@BarstoolNate) October 29, 2019I actually do feel bad for some of the guys in the #Redskins' front office when stories like Bruce Allen asking for Denzel Ward in a Trent Williams trade come out. They have smart, qualified, competent people. That does no get mentioned during the Allen zing fest that follows.
— Grant Paulsen (@granthpaulsen) October 29, 2019The #Redskins are living in fairytale land. Like, have a sense. https://t.co/TYRmyMnKxR
— Anthony Rodriguez (@AnthonyRod33) October 29, 2019Negotiating with Bruce is...an experience. https://t.co/ZtPjB122Sw
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) October 29, 2019And then, the deadline passed: no deal.
Source tells me no Trent Williams trade coming.
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) October 29, 2019Minutes later, Williams reported to Ashburn. And just like that, six months of speculation went up in smoke.
A big move on deadline day: Trent Williams holdout is over, per source. He has reported back to the Redskins.
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) October 29, 2019@nflnetwork Trent Williams just reported to Washington Redskins
— OG aka CAPTAIN 23 (@DeAngeloHall23) October 29, 2019#Redskins LT Trent Williams was the subject of trade talks that ultimately didn’t come to fruition… and now the team and his agent Vince Taylor confirm that he’s in the building. His contract won’t toll, he’ll now get paid… and we’ll see when he plays.
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) October 29, 2019And still, there's uncertainty about how this ultimately plays out.
Trent Williams was in the #Redskins building well before the deadline today, I'm told. So he does not need to be reinstated. So by my math he will now be able to get credit for this season putting him one step closer to FA. Lowers his value substantially on the offseason market.
— Grant Paulsen (@granthpaulsen) October 29, 2019Good detail on this from @ProFootballTalk. I've heard so many different things on how many games he has to be here for from people I trust. I've heard 8. I've heard by week 10. I've heard just one. It's actually TBD, if the #Redskins wanna go there. https://t.co/P1JPGhHUzg
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) October 29, 2019I'm sure it's not all awkward between Trent Williams and Bruce Allen in Ashburn right now...
This situation is nuts. Trent Williams is not only back at Redskins Park and that includes getting checked out by the Redskins medical staff. The same staff he reportedly lost trust in a year ago.
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) October 29, 2019Source tells me that while Trent Williams has reported to the Redskins, he has no intention of playing this season.
