Shohei Ohtani has an impressive Hall of Fame resume already: -- four MVPs, four Silver Sluggers, two World Series rings, Rookie of the Year, but there is one thing the Dodgers star is still looking to add:
A Cy Young Award.
Through seven starts this season, the 31-year-old is poised to change that. Ohtani is 3-2 with a 0.82 ERA and 0.82 WHIP with 50 strikeouts in 44 innings pitched.
“Dave Roberts told us…[Ohtani] wants a Cy Young Award this year,” Cody Decker of 97.1 The Fan’s “Derek and Decker” said on Monday. “You know why? There ain’t nobody …that has an MVP as an offensive player and a Cy Young as a pitcher. It doesn’t exist. This isn’t a real thing.”
Ohtani, whose next start is Wednesday vs. the Padres, faces some tough competition, particularly Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes, who has 63 strikeouts in 55 innings pitched and a 0.71 WHIP but an ERA of 2.62 that sits far behind Ohtani.
A Cy Young Award would not only make Ohtani the first Cy Young winner from Japan, but it would cement his spot on both the LA and baseball’s Mount Rushmore, according to Decker.
“In fact, he IS the Mount Rushmore,” Decker said. “Just put four different versions of Shohei Ohtani on baseball’s Mount Rushmore if he wins the Cy Young.”
