(670 The Score) Expectations were high for the Cubs entering this 2019 season, and they have been nowhere near being met.
For all the frustration fans feel about the Cubs and their 3-8 start, it can be just as disheartening for an executive in the front office. But Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein isn't letting it bring him down.
Epstein believes this has been too small of a sample size for the Cubs to judge what their club will truly be this season.
"We're hanging in there," Epstein said on the McNeil & Parkins Show on Thursday afternoon. "It is really important to sort of stay the course early. Until you really find your level, it can be destabilizing.
"Until guys find their level, you just got to hang in there and ride it out."
Among the players searching for their level is star third baseman Kris Bryant, whom Epstein said is healthy after dealing with a left shoulder injury for much of 2018. Bryant is hitting .239 with just one homer in 11 games.
The Cubs did get progress in Epstein's view from right-hander Yu Darvish in a 5-2 loss to the Pirates on Wednesday in which he allowed four earned runs over 5 1/3 innings.
What gives Epstein confidence that the Cubs will work through their early struggles and become a contender this season?
"It's the overall talent and depth we have at the big league level right now," he said.
