Santana was designated for assignment by the White Sox on Friday, this after going 0-2 with a 9.45 ERA over three starts with the team. Rookie left fielder Eloy Jimenez was reinstated from the bereavement list in a corresponding move.
Santana, 36, is 149-127 with a 4.09 ERA in his 15-year major-league career. The White Sox had recalled outfielder Nicky Delmonico in placing Jimenez on the bereavement list while he mourned the passing of his grandmother in Peurto Rico.
The White Sox open a three-game series with the Tigers on Friday at 7:10 from Guaranteed Rate Field.
