(670 The Score) As the White Sox progress in their third rebuilding season by evaluating what young talent should be a part of their future, they also may have identified a veteran who fits into the long-term picture.
Catcher James McCann has had a breakout season, hitting .329 with four homers, 15 RBIs and an .864 OPS in 44 games while ranking second in All-Star voting at his position in the American League. His work at the plate and with a young pitching staff has drawn widespread praise in the organization and put him in squarely in the conversation of being a piece of the White Sox's long-term future.
As it pertains to that possibility, McCann knows what he wants.
"I would love to be here long term," McCann said on the Mully & Haugh Show on Wednesday morning.
McCann, who turns 29 on Thursday, is working on a $2.5-million salary in 2019 and is arbitration-eligible in the offseason, as the team controls his rights through 2020.
"I've really enjoyed being in Chicago. My family loves it here. The clubhouse is a lot of fun -- a lot of young talent, a lot of good guys in there. So that's definitely on my mind. I'd love to be here, but at the same time, I also know there's a business side of the game and as a player, you can't control that all the time. I try not to think about it. I try to just take it day for day, take it for what it is. I know that God has a plan, and he has me exactly where he wants me right now."
