Report: MLB Weighs Cactus/Grapefruit League Idea

(670 The Score/Radio.com Sports) Another unconventional MLB proposal regarding format in a potential return to action has been leaked as play remains halted by the coronavirus pandemic.

League officials are weighing a proposal to realign the current American League/National League and division setup into a Cactus League/Grapefruit League model used for spring training play, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports. The structure would just be in place for 2020, which will -- at best -- feature a shortended season due to a suspension of play amid the pandemic.

The traditional leagues and divisions would be scrapped in favor of all 30 teams returning to their spring training homes. From there, the Cactus League clubs would play one another in Arizona and the Grapefruit League squad would each other in Florida, USA Today reported. The proposal would limit travel with regular-season games played in only two states, and no fans would be allowed.

Both leagues would likely adopt the designated hitter under the proposal, the report said.

Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa, whos' now an executive with the Angels, was briefed on the plan. He supports the creative proposal and others like it.

"When you're trying to get really creative, why say no now?" La Russa told USA Today. "So, you have a unique season. I've got no problem with that."

The proposal is one of many being considered, as MLB officials continue to leak ideas and seemingly gauge the public reaction to them. Like any plan for games to resume, there are many hurdles to clear, and clearance from public health officials would be needed.
