(670 The Score) After shattering Division-III records and leading North Central to a national championship last season, all Broc Rutter wanted was the chance to become an NFL quarterback.
The phone rang with that opportunity last Saturday, as the 49ers signed Rutter as an undrafted free agent. A Naperville product, Rutter will head to San Francisco and compete for a spot on the 49ers.
"It was super exciting," Rutter said on the Mully & Haugh Show on Thursday morning. "It's obviously as a moment as a competitor, you dream of your whole life -- to make it to the highest level and just get a chance."
Only a couple hours after Rutter signed with the 49ers, he received another phone call, this from one of the team's key veterans. Kicker Robbie Gould called Rutter and welcomed him to the team.
Rutter will work in a 49ers quarterbacks group that includes starter Jimmy Garoppolo, a Rolling Meadows native who led San Francisco to the Super Bowl last season.
Rutter has previously studied how Garoppolo operates as a quarterback.
"He's so fundamentally sound with his feet, everything he does," Rutter said. "So, it's really cool to get the opportunity to go out there to San Fran and learn from him."
The NFL has postponed its on-field offseason work due the coronavirus pandemic, meaning Rutter will have to wait for his opportunity with the 49ers. He can take part in the virtual work this spring and summer, but won't be able to strap on a gold helmet right away.
Rutter is still taking in this moment and eager to see through this chance.
"It's been a pretty surreal last couple days, but I'm thrilled with the opportunity," Rutter said. "I can't wait to get to work."
