Awaiting Test Results, Rick Renteria Won't Manage

(670 The Score) White Sox manager Rick Renteria won't be with the club for its game against the Indians on Monday evening out of "an abundance of caution" after he woke up with a cough and as he currenty awaits his coronavirus test results, the team said.

Bench coach Joe McEwing will serve as the team's manager.

"Ricky Renteria awoke this morning with a slight cough and nasal congestion," general manager Rick Hahn said in a statement. "After consulting with our team doctors, Ricky underwent precautionary testing today at a Cleveland hospital. Out of an abundance of caution, Ricky will remain at the team hotel and not manage until we receive confirmation of today's test result. Bench coach Joe McEwing will manage the White Sox during Ricky's absence."

In a pregame interview, McEwing emphasized that the 58-year-old Renteria is feeling well.

"He says he feels great, he feels fine," McEwing said. "It's just being very cautious."

The news about the 58-year-old Renteria came on the same day that concern mounted about health and safety across MLB, as the Marlins have been hit hard by a coronavirus outbreak. The Marlins-Orioles and Phillies-Yankees games were each postponed for safety reasons Monday evening. The Marlins and Phillies completed a series in Philadelphia on Sunday. The Yankees were then set to visit the Phillies for a series.
