Cardinals Legend, Hall Of Famer Lou Brock Dies At 81

Brock played for the Cubs from 1961 to 1964.

St. Louis Cardinals legend and Hall of Fame outfielder Lou Brock died Sunday at the age of 81, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

Brock, who was battling a number of medical conditions in recent years, is best-known for setting Major League Baseball's all-time stolen base record with 938 swipes in his 19-year career – a record that was later broken by Rickey Henderson in 1991.

Brock played in the majors from 1961-'79 and spent his first few years with the Chicago Cubs before he was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1964 in what's considered one of the greatest deals in Cardinals history. The team acquired Brock in exchange for pitcher Ernie Broglio.

Brock helped lead the Cardinals to the National League pennant and the World Series title in 1964, their first since 1946. He hit .300 in the World Series as the Cardinals beat the Red Sox in seven games.

Brock won another World Series with the Cardinals in 1967 and finished his career as a six-time All-Star who led MLB in stolen bases in eight different seasons and had 3,023 hits.
