Bears guard Joe Thuney wins first ever NFL Protector of the Year award

(104.3 The Score) Bears guard Joe Thuney has been named the winner of the inaugural NFL Protector of the Year award.

The award is given to the top offensive lineman in the NFL and is voted on by six legendary former offensive linemen.

Thuney was acquired by the Bears last March in exchange for a fourth-round pick. He started every game this season, earning Pro Bowl and All-Pro recognition.

Thuney is a four-time All-Pro, a three-time Pro Bowl player and a four-time Super Bowl champion. He was a key leader for the Bears and a pivotal force in paving the way for Chicago's offense.

The Protector of the Year award was presented Thursday evening at the NFL Honors ceremony in San Francisco.

Bears head coach Ben Johnson finished fourth in the voting for the AP Coach of the Year award, which was won by Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel.

During his first season as head coach, Johnson led the Bears to an 11-6 record, the NFC North title and the team's first playoff win in 15 years.
