(670 The Score) Scouts in the NFL spend countless hours studying football prospects across the country and many more traveling to watch them. It's an exhausting job with a lot of time behind the wheel of rental cars and plenty of stories to share.
Bears general manager Ryan Poles came up as a scout with the Chiefs organization before being hired to lead the football operations at Halas Hall. On the Bernstein & Holmes Show on Friday, Poles shared the memorable story of traveling across Idaho and into Montana on a dark drive through the mountains late at night some years back.
"When it got dark, you couldn't see where you were going," Poles said. "I was listening to a Monday Night (Football) game, I'm driving and really not paying too much attention to my speed or anything like that, and then the sirens go off behind me and I'm like, 'Oh, no.' I have no idea how fast I was going.
"(The police officer) goes, 'Sir, I've been tracking you for five miles. You've been going anywhere from 90 to 95 miles per hour.' I was like, 'You got to be kidding me. I'm sorry. I've just been listening to this game.' He goes, 'I'm not going to give you a ticket; I'm going to give you a warning. That warning is there's moose crossing all over here. If you hit one, you're going to die. Have a good night.'"
Poles has taken that advice to heart in similar situations since.
"Cruise control at 65 moving forward," he said.
