(670 The Score) The Bears set their initial 53-man roster for the 2020 regular season, reaching that limit after making 27 cuts ahead of the deadline at 3 p.m. Saturday.
There were few surprises to be found as the Bears formed their roster. Here's a rundown at each position:
Quarterback (2): Mitchell Trubisky, Nick Foles
Cut (1): Tyler Bray
Note: The Bears named Trubisky their starter Friday, and Foles will serve as the backup. Waived by the Bears, Bray will likely be stashed on the team's practice squad.
Running back (4): David Montgomery, Tarik Cohen, Ryan Nall, Cordarrelle Patterson
Cut (2): Napoleon Maxwell, Artavis Pierce
Note: The Bears waived their insurance policies in Maxwell and Pierce, an encouraging sign that Montgomery (groin) will be ready for the opener on Sept. 13.
Wide receiver (6): Allen Robinson, Anthony Miller, Riley Ridley, Javon Wims, Ted Ginn Jr., Darnell Mooney
Cut (4): Alex Wesley, Ahmad Wagner, Thomas Ives, Reggie Davis
Note: The Bears like their young receiving depth behind top target Robinson. Roles will be defined throughout the course of the season.
Tight end (5): Jimmy Graham, Cole Kmet, Demetrius Harris, J.P. Holtz, Eric Saubert
Cut (1): Jesper Horsted
Note: The Bears' tight end position was their greatest weakness last season. It might be one of their greatest strengths this year.
Offensive line (9): Charles Leno Jr., James Daniels, Cody Whitehair, Germain Ifedi, Bobby Massie, Alex Bars, Jason Spriggs, Rashaad Coward, Arlington Hambright
Cut: Corey Levin, Badara Traore, Dieter Eiselen, Lachavious Simmons
Note: The Bears have young reserves on the offensive line who could challenge for jobs if the established starters struggle.
Defensive line (5): Akiem Hicks, Bilal Nichols, Brent Urban, Roy Robertson-Harris, John Jenkins
Cut (3): Abdullah Anderson, Lee Autry, LaCale London
Note: The Bears will sorely miss nose tackle Eddie Goldman after he opted out of the season.
Outside linebacker (5): Khalil Mack, Robert Quinn, Barkevious Mingo, Trevis Gipson, James Vaughters
Cut (2): Isaiah Irving, Ledarius Mack
Note: The younger Mack didn't make the Bears' roster but presumably is a candidate for the practice squad.
Inside linebacker (4): Danny Trevathan, Roquan Smith, Joel Iyiegbuniwe, Josh Woods
Cut (2): Rashad Smith, Keandre Jones
Note: The Bears will count on Iyiegbuniwe as that next man up if Trevathan or Smith deal with injuries this season.
Cornerback (5): Kyle Fuller, Buster Skrine, Jaylon Johnson, Duke Shelley, Kindle Vildor
Cut (1): Xavier Crawford
Note: A second-round pick this spring, Johnson looks set to start opposite of Fuller.
Safety (5): Eddie Jackson, Deon Bush, Tashaun Gipson, DeAndre Houston-Carson, Sherrick McManis
Note: Marqui Christian will open the season on the reserve/suspended list and serve a two-game suspension.
Special teams (3): Eddy Pineiro, Pat O'Donnell, Patrick Scales
Cut (1): Cairo Santos
Note: The Bears could place Pineiro (groin) on injured reserve to open the season. Santos is expected to be signed back to the Bears this week.
Injured reserve: CB Artie Burns, TE Darion Clark, CB Michael Joseph,
Suspended: S Marqui Christian (two games)
