Bears sign 14 players to their practice squad

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (670 The Score) Rookie quarterback Austin Reed, a sentimental favorite on the "Hard Knocks" series, has joined the Bears' practice squad, the team announced Wednesday.

Reed joined the Bears as an undrafted free agent following the NFL Draft in late April and was competing to be the team's third quarterback. He and veteran quarterback Brett Rypien were cut Tuesday as Chicago set its initial 53-man roster.

The Bears also signed 13 other players to their practice squad: linebacker Micah Baskerville, guard Theo Benedet, tight end Stephen Carlson, defensive tackle Byron Cowart, offensive lineman Jake Curhan, receiver Collin Johnson, safety Quindell Johnson, linebacker Carlo Jones, defensive end Jamree Kromah, defensive tackle Dashaun Mallory, safety Tarvarius Moore, cornerback Reddy Steward and cornerback Ro Torrence.

The Bears are also expected to sign long snapper Scott Daly to their practice squad with intention of elevating him to the active roster, a source said. Daly spent the last three years as the Lions' long snapper.

The expectation is that Bears starting long snapper Patrick Scales (back) will open the season on injured reserve. Veteran fullback Khari Blasingame is expected to be signed to the active roster to fill that roster spot.
