Mully & Haugh: How do the Bears pivot with Trey Smith off the board?
(670 The Score) The Bears didn't even get a chance to pursue Pro Bowl guard Trey Smith this offseason.
On Thursday, news broke that the Chiefs will use the franchise tag on Smith to retain him. The sides also have discussed a long-term contract. Smith would've been a target of the Bears had he reached free agency, but they'll now have to look elsewhere.
On the Mully & Haugh Show, Tribune writer Brad Biggs laid out what the Bears' backup plan could be. He expects Chicago to pursue center Drew Dalman in free agency. Dalman is one of the best in the game at his position and is likely to make $15 million or so annually on his next contract.
Biggs suggested the Bears missing out on Smith could be viewed as a blessing in disguise, given that he was in line to land a huge payday above $20 million annually on a long-term deal. There are plenty of "pretty good" players available in free agency for the Bears to pursue, and they could better fill their needs by spreading their money out a bit. In addition to their offensive line, the Bears have needs at edge rusher and defensive tackle on the other side of the ball.
"The Bears are multiple pieces away here," Biggs said.
"They've got to accomplish a lot of things here."
