New Bears coach Matt Eberflus won't be team's defensive play-caller

(670 The Score) New Bears coach Matt Eberflus won't serve as the defensive play-caller for his team, he said Monday while being introduced at Halas Hall.

Eberflus has been the Colts' defensive coordinator for the past four seasons, but he believes his focus needs to be more holistic on the sideline on game days, so he'll leave the play-calling up to his defensive coordinator, a position the Bears haven't yet filled after hiring Eberflus last Thursday.

"I do believe that to be the head football coach and be efficient at that, you are exactly the head football coach," Eberflus said. "So I can be involved in all aspects of the game. So the defensive coordinator we hire will call the defensive plays. I will not do that."

Under Eberflus' guidance, the Colts ranked ninth in scoring defense, 16th in total defense and second in takeaways in 2021. They ranked 10th in scoring defense, eighth in total defense and fifth in takeaways in 2020.
