(670 The Score) University of Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck spent one year working alongside new Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy. That came at Western Michigan in 2013, when the Broncos went 1-11.
That proved to be the beginning of Fleck's rise in coaching and a stop for Getsy on his eventual journey to Chicago. While he had a short stay at Western Michigan, Getsy left a strong impression on Fleck, who sees him as an innovative mind.
"When you start looking at the people like the Schottenheimers and the McVays and the LaFleurs, people like that who have done things at a very young age, I think you're a little more courageous possibly at a young age," Fleck told the Parking & Spiegel Show on Monday. "You're willing to take a little bit more chances. You're probably a little bit more willing to find new ways of doing things and being open to that because you haven't had 30 years of doing a lot of things and the same thing happening, kind of sticking to your guns.
"He's been around so many amazing coaches and one of the best quarterbacks that has ever played the game and been able to not only be around him but coach him and listen to him. He's a great listener. When you're a great listener, you can be an elite leader. I'm not comparing him to the Schottenheimers or the McVays or the LaFleurs and saying he is that yet.
"Look at the people who are in the playoffs this year and look at all the offensive play-calling, what's going in the NFL. It's very innovative and Luke has always been that type of coach that's willing to push the envelope and find a way to be able to get points on the board.
"It's going to be fun to watch him develop that offense, his offense, and watch the players develop in it."
Getsy was hired by the Bears after working as the Packers' quarterbacks coach for the past three seasons. He added the role of passing game coordinator in 2020 as he worked alongside star quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
New Bears coach Matt Eberflus, who has a defensive-oriented background, hired Getsy on Saturday to lead Chicago's offense.
