(670 The Score) Waukegan has become the latest suburb to express interest in being the next home of the Bears as the franchise considers its options on where to build a new stadium.
Waukegan mayor Ann B. Taylor recently sent a letter to Bears president/CEO Kevin Warren extolling the virtues of the city, as WGN reported. As selling points, Taylor cited large parcels of land available to build on along the lakefront, the northern suburb's proximity to the Bears' headquarters in Lake Forest and the surrounding infrastructure, which includes Interstate 94, U.S. Route 41 and a Metra stop.
"Our working class and diverse community is as tough as the 1985 Super Bowl-winning Bears, and our leadership team at Waukegan City Hall is as aggressive as Justin Fields running the ball downfield when it comes to creating economic opportunities for our city, our residents and the region at large," Taylor said in her letter, which was obtained by WGN. "Our city's staff and I invite you and your leadership to come to Waukegan to learn about the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity our city can offer the Bears.
"We believe that the Monsters of the Midway deserve the opportunity to continue the tradition of playing along the shores of Lake Michigan, with the market opportunity of having a year-round facility capable of hosting other major events, including the Super Bowl, the Final Four and other events on an international scale."
On June 2, the Bears announced that Arlington Heights was no longer their sole focus as a location to potentially build a new stadium. That news came as there has been tension over the tax assessment on the Arlington Park property, which the Bears bought for $197 million in 2021.
As it has been for a long time, the expectation remains that the Bears will leave Soldier Field in the city to build a new stadium in Arlington Heights. The Bears are hoping to get the school districts around Arlington Heights to renegotiate the tax rate, a source recently told 670 The Score host Dan Bernstein.
The Bears have also met with Naperville officials about the possibility of building a new stadium in their municipality.
