(670 The Score) The Blackhawks have hired Rob Cookson as a new assistant coach, they announced Wednesday afternoon.

Cookson, 60, was most recently an assistant coach with HC Lugano in the National League in Switzerland, a job he left in April. Cookson previously was an assistant in the NHL for 11 seasons, with the Flames from 2001-'11 and the Senators from 2016-'19.

"Rob's extensive NHL experience will complement our staff immediately," Blackhawks interim general manager Kyle Davidson said in a statement. "It's his fresh perspective, however, that will really benefit the team as we work on this transition. We look forward to Rob meeting us on this road trip and I know he is eager to get going with this group."

In another move Wednesday, the Blackhawks officially elevated assistant Marc Crawford's title to associate coach on interim head coach Derek King's staff.
