(670 The Score) Just when Bulls guard Alex Caruso thought he was nearing a return, he got a dose of bad news.

Caruso has entered the NBA's health and safety protocols, coach Billy Donovan told reporters Wednesday. Caruso has been sidelined since Dec. 20 due to a foot sprain and was nearing a return. Donovan had previously called Caruso's progress "great" in his injury recovery – putting him in line to perhaps return to game action as soon as Friday – but now he'll need to be out at least six more days or so.

Caruso is averaging 8.4 points, 3.7 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.0 steals in 28.0 minutes across 26 games, including nine starts. He has consistently been a member of the Bulls' closing lineup and has been instrumental in their solid defense.

With the Caruso news, every single Bulls player on a standard contract has now been in the health and safety protocols at some point this season. Big man Tyler Cook, who's on a two-way contract, has avoided the protocols, as has guard Mac McClung, a recent addition who's on a 10-day contract.
