(670 The Score) The Bulls didn't get lucky in the NBA Draft lottery Tuesday evening.
Chicago landed the No. 11 pick in the NBA Draft after its numerical combinations didn't match the ping-pong balls that were drawn in the lottery.
The Bulls' ownership of the No. 11 pick was short-lived, as it was immediately conveyed to the Magic as the final payment to Orlando in the trade that sent center Nikola Vucevic to Chicago in March 2021. The Bulls would've retained their pick Tuesday had they jumped into the top four selections in the lottery.
The Spurs landed the No. 1 overall pick and the right to select 7-foot-4 French phenom Victor Wembanyama. The Hornets landed the No. 2 pick, while the Blazers followed at No. 3.
Entering the evening, the Bulls held a 1.8% chance to land the No. 1 pick and an 8.5% chance of leaping up into the top four to retain their pick this season.
The Bulls don't currently own a draft pick of any sort in 2023, but there's a chance they could still have a pick to use on June 22. The Blazers currently owe the Bulls a lottery-protected first-round pick. That didn't convey in this cycle because Portland finished with the fifth-worst record in the NBA, but the Blazers are encumbered on the trade market for as long as they owe the Bulls that pick into the future. It's possible the Blazers could work out a deal with the Bulls to send a different pick they own – perhaps No. 23 overall, acquired from the New York Knicks – to Chicago to open up more flexibility to send future picks to another team in a deal to help build around star guard Damian Lillard in Portland. Blazers general manager Joe Cronin previously acknowledged that he talks to the Bulls in every transaction window about the pick that Portland owes Chicago.
The Bulls don't own a second-round pick in this NBA Draft. They've conveyed the No. 42 overall pick to the Wizards, and the late second-round pick that the Bulls held (which was originally the Nuggets' but was acquired from the Cavaliers) was forfeited as Chicago's penalty for tampering in its acquisition of guard Lonzo Ball in 2021.
The Bulls are coming off a 40-42 season in which they missed the playoffs. They lost to the Heat, who have advanced to the Eastern Conference finals, in the play-in game for the No. 8 seed. The NBA Draft will be held June 22.
