The Chicago Cubs and Cubs Charities are teaming up with Advocate Health Care, AbbVie and Audacy to unite fans in the fight against cancer as Cubs for a Cure returns for a third year, benefiting organizations working to find a cure for the disease. The initiative raised more than $1 million last season, and the Cubs and Cubs Charities hope to surpass that milestone once again with a multi-day fundraising effort that will include a 24-hour radiothon on 104.3 The Score and opportunities to give during the May 23 game presented by Advocate Health Care.
“We’re proud to continue to support the fight against cancer by bringing back Cubs for a Cure for a third year,” Cubs president of business operations Crane Kenney said. “Our goal is to raise over $1 million, and we can’t do it without our fans. Whether it’s calling into the radiothon, joining us at the ballpark May 23 or going online to donate today, every dollar helps fight this terrible disease.”
The push for $1 million will begin with a 24-hour radiothon on 104.3 The Score from 10 a.m. on May 21 until 10 a.m. on May 22, during which fans can call in to donate for a chance to win prizes. The radiothon will be simulcast on Marquee Sports Network and will be hosted by former Score host and current FS1 host Danny Parkins.
“We are honored to carry on the tradition of the Cubs for a Cure radiothon with our great partner, the Chicago Cubs,” 104.3 The Score vice president of programming Mitch Rosen said. “The potential to raise so much money and help so many people is incredible and a testament to The Score’s audience and baseball fans worldwide. We are grateful to our host Danny Parkins, BrainUp, the Cubs organization and our entire team at The Score for the incredible effort made not just in the 24 hours, but all the hard work leading up to May 21.”
Cubs players and special guests will also call in throughout the radiothon to share their stories and personal experiences. Proceeds from the radiothon will be donated by Cubs Charities to BrainUp, a nonprofit dedicated to brain cancer awareness and research.
"The fact that I get to continue to host this radiothon in partnership with the Chicago Cubs and The Score is the single biggest honor of my career,” Parkins said. “I do this in honor of my brother Brad, who passed away from brain cancer, and for everyone who faces this horrible disease. 100% of the money raised during the radiothon goes toward cancer research, so let's make this our biggest year yet!"
Following the radiothon, Cubs for a Cure will culminate with fundraising efforts and gameday festivities during the May 23 game presented by Advocate Health Care. Highlights include a ceremonial first pitch thrown by an Advocate Health Care provider and a meaningful “Ring the Bell” ceremony in which an Advocate Health Care patient will mark the end of their cancer treatment journey by ringing the bell during the game. In addition, a special seventh-inning stretch will be conducted by an individual impacted by cancer.
The Cubs Charities 50/50 raffle on May 23 will offer fans another opportunity to make an impact, as Cubs Charities will donate $50,000 from the raffle proceeds to support Cubs for a Cure. Fans in Illinois can purchase raffle ticket entries online at www.cubs.com/raffle starting at 10 a.m. on May 23. Raffle tickets will also be available for purchase in person at Wrigley Field from a Cubs Charities raffle ambassador when gates open through the bottom of the eighth inning.
To contribute to the cause, fans can donate starting today at www.cubsforacure.com or by texting CURE26 to 41444 with their donation amount. All donations will go to Cubs Charities, which will distribute the proceeds from all fundraising efforts to nonprofit organizations working to end cancer.
