Crane Kenney: Cubs planning to add more pitching soon

"We understand that pitching is a place we need to spend a little more money," Kenney says.

(670 The Score) With the start of spring training awaiting next week, the Cubs still intend to add more pitching soon, president of business operations Crane Kenney said on the Mully & Haugh Show on Friday morning.

Kenney has been in daily discussions with president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer regarding the state of the team, and he relayed the message that everyone in the organization is on the same page in that pitching remains a concern. The budget is available to add a little more in that department, Kenney said.

"There's room to add some pitching," Kenney said. "I know Jed has been working pretty hard. We talk every day, and we understand that pitching is a place we need to spend a little more time and a little more money. He's got some conversations going. I'd be very surprised if we were done on the pitching side."

Over the winter, the Cubs lost four-fifths of their intended starting rotation for the 2020 campaign, trading ace Yu Darvish to the Padres and letting Jon Lester, Jose Quintana and Tyler Chatwood walk in free agency. That has left two spots open for competition at the back end of their rotation. The Cubs recently signed right-hander Trevor Williams to compete for a rotation spot and also have some younger options in their own system.

Kenney was on the Mully & Haugh Show to announce that the Cubs and Entercom have reached a multi-year broadcast deal to keep games on 670 The Score. You can read more about it here.
