In exchange for Martinez, the Cubs will send the Rays "a player to be named or cash consideration as well as a player to be named or cash consideration," the team said.
Martinez, 32, has primarily served as a designated hitter with the Rays. He's a career .294 hitter with 43 home runs and 182 RBIs in five MLB seasons.
Martinez has had great success against left-handed pitching in his career, posting a slash line of .319/.392/.554 (.946 OPS) against southpaws.
In a corresponding roster move, the Cubs designated catcher Josh Phegley for assignment.
The Cubs close a four-game series against the Reds in Cincinnati at Great American Ballpark on Sunday afternoon.
