Cubs add 2 prospects to 40-man roster, designate 2 players for assignment ahead of Rule 5 Draft protection deadline

(670 The Score) The Cubs completed a few key roster maneuvers Tuesday evening, selecting two prospects to add to their 40-man roster and designating two players for assignment ahead of the deadline for protecting players from the Rule 5 Draft.

Cubs outfield prospect Owen Caissie and infield prospect Ben Cowles were selected to the 40-man roster, thus protecting them in the Rule 5 Draft. To clear room, former closer Adbert Alzolay and outfield prospect Brennen Davis were each designated for assignment.

Caissie, 22, hit .278 with 19 home runs and 75 RBIs with the Triple-A Iowa Cubs this past season. He's one of the Cubs' current top prospects. Cowles, 24, hit .286 with nine home runs and 51 RBIs at Double-A Tennessee. He was acquired from the Yankees in July as part of a trade package that sent right-hander Mark Leiter Jr. to New York.

Alzolay, 29, had 27 saves over 121 games with the Cubs. He'll miss the entire 2025 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Davis, 25, was a former top prospect for the Cubs. His career has been hampered by several long-term injuries, including a fractured ankle that he suffered in September.
