(670 The Score) The Cubs appear to have their catching situation sorted out for 2023.
Chicago was finalizing a deal with catcher Tucker Barnhart on Thursday, Sahadev Sharma of the Athletic reported. Barnhart is a two-time Gold Glove winner who projects to split the catching duties with Yan Gomes after the Cubs let three-time All-Star Willson Contreras walk in free agency.
Barnhart, 31, is coming off a poor offensive season, as he hit .221 with one homer, 16 RBIs and a .554 OPS in 94 games for the Tigers in 2022. He has long rated as strong defensive player, and that's an area the Cubs have prioritized this offseason.
Barnhart has hit .245 with a .680 OPS in his nine-year MLB career. He played for the Reds for his first eight big league seasons.
