(670 The Score) The Cubs made a notable move recently in regards to their long-term plans when they moved four-time Gold Glove shortstop Andrelton Simmons over to second base for the first time in his 11-year career.

It signaled the Cubs’ confidence in Nico Hoerner as their shortstop moving forward, a testament to his work at that position and their hopes for his future. Cubs outfielder Ian Happ is thrilled for a player who has been a close friend and sees the potential he has at shortstop.

“I don’t think people realize how athletic he is,” Happ said. “He’s absurdly fast, super quick twitched. He works extremely, extremely hard on his craft. He has a really good understanding for moving pre-pith, for understanding where guys are going to hit the ball. All these little things that you can’t teach an infielder, he kind of has those things.

“I think he’ll do whatever it takes to stick at shortstop at this level. It’s been really impressive to watch for me.”

Hoerner was the Cubs’ first-round pick in the 2018 MLB Draft. Now 25, he’s hitting .296 this season. He was activated from the injured list last week after suffering an ankle sprain.

The Cubs host the Brewers on Tuesday night at Wrigley Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CT. That game will be broadcast on 670 The Score.
