(Audacy) One of MLB's most vocal players, Cubs right-hander Marcus Stroman on Tuesday posted and later deleted a tweet bashing the New York Mets, his former team.
A Long Island native, Stroman had at one point hoped to be a Met long-term but knew that was no longer in the cards once New York shelled out a combined $228 million for the free-agent trio of right-hander Max Scherzer, outfielder Starling Marte and infielder Eduardo Escobar. Stroman then joined the Cubs on a three-year, $71-million pact on Dec. 1, hours before MLB's transaction freeze — the result of baseball's first work stoppage in 26 years — went into effect.
Months later, Stroman appears to still harbor animosity over how his free agency played out, feeling unwanted by the team he gave his heart and soul to. Stroman ripped Mets general manager Billy Eppler on Twitter while adding he's "beyond thankful" to no longer be employed by the team. Stroman posted a 3.21 ERA for the Mets across 44 starts in 2019 and 2021 while opting out of the 2020 season due to the pandemic.
The Cubs are scheduled to visit the Mets at Citi Field on Sept. 12-14.
