Cubs right-hander Marcus Stroman diagnosed with rib cartilage fracture, with no timetable set for a potential return

(670 The Score) Cubs right-hander Marcus Stroman's season is in jeopardy amid a serious injury situation.

Stroman has a right rib cartilage fracture, the team announced Wednesday afternoon. The news came one day after the Cubs revealed that Stroman was dealing with rib pain, which derailed the original plan for him to return to action Wednesday.

The Cubs set no timetable for a potential Stroman return, which is perhaps an indication of the seriousness of the ailment and certainly reflects the uncertainty that comes with it. Stroman originally landed on the injury list due to a hip ailment, and he hasn't pitched for the Cubs since July 31.

"As far as the severity of the injury, it's an unusual injury for a pitcher," Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer said. "We are going to wait and see after some rest time. But we are unclear what this all means at that point."

Stroman is 10-8 with a 3.85 ERA and 1.24 WHIP in 23 starts this season.

Stroman's injury situation is a big blow to the Cubs' playoff push. Entering play Wednesday evening, the Cubs trail the NL Central-leading Brewers by 3.5 games and are one game behind the Marlins for the final wild-card spot.
