(670 The Score) The Cubs earned one of their best wins of the season Wednesday, using a six-run sixth inning to storm back for a 10-6 victory against the Pirates at Wrigley Field.
Just last Friday morning, the Cubs were 10 games under .500 and 7.5 games back in the NL Central. Now, they're just 4.5 games behind the division-leading Pirates and have a chance to sweep them Thursday evening as Chicago ace Marcus Stroman takes the mound. By the end of Thursday, the Cubs could be just 3.5 games back in the NL Central.
It all begs the question – will the Cubs be buyers or sellers ahead of the trade deadline on Aug. 1? And when will they decide which direction to take? Mike Mulligan and David Haugh discussed that topic on their show Thursday morning.
"Is there a scenario – and I don't believe there is, frankly – but is there a scenario where they are not only no longer sellers but they're actual buyers?" Mulligan said.
"Why would you say that's not possible?" Haugh asked.
"I just think they've allocated their funds for this year already and they would be going into spending next year's money," Mulligan said.
"I think Tom Ricketts, the last we heard from him, was pretty adamant about the fact that if they're in the mix, they will spend," Haugh said. "Crane Kenney said it. Jed Hoyer, I think, has alluded to it."
They guys went on.
"If you're talking about the Cubs specifically as a buyer, I'm not willing to concede on June 15 that they're going to be sellers," Haugh said.
"I'm not arguing, but I think they're closer to seller than buyer," Mulligan said.
