White Sox right-hander Lucas Giolito exits in 5th inning with left hamstring tightness

(670 The Score) White Sox right-hander Lucas Giolito exited in the fifth inning against the Pirates on Tuesday evening shortly after awkwardly fielding a groundball earlier in the frame. He was suffering from left hamstring tightness, the team later said.

A trainer checked on Giolito after a play in which he fielded a chopper in front of the mound from Pirates outfielder Ben Gamel that went for an infield single with one out. Giolito stayed in the game but was then removed a couple pitches later after the discomfort was clear. After the game, he indicated he felt fine after the awkward slip but said felt a "tug" in his hamstring a couple pitches later. Giolito added his discomfort could've been unrelated to the fielding play.

Giolito went 4 1/3 innings, allowing two runs, both earned, on three hits and four walks while striking out five. The Pirates scored twice in the fifth inning to tie the game before the White Sox went on to a 4-2 win.

Giolito will be further evaluated Wednesday, the White Sox said.
