(Audacy) Fox Sports will replace Joe Buck with Kevin Burkhardt as its top voice for NFL broadcasts, Andrew Marchand of the New York Post reported Monday. The two parties are working on a long-term contract that will make Burkhardt the voice of two of the next three Super Bowls.
The Jersey-born Burkhardt got his start in the business calling high school and minor league baseball games in the northern part of the state before he eventually caught a break as a part-timer for WFAN and WCBS. Burkhardt eventually moved on to join the Mets broadcasting team at SNY and then to Fox, where he has hosted World Series pregame and postgame shows as well as also held duties as the network's No. 2 NFL play-by-play broadcaster.
Burkhardt will have tough shoes to fill replacing Buck, a broadcasting legend who had worked at Fox for nearly three decades before leaving for ESPN and the Monday Night Football booth, where he'll continue to work with longtime partner Troy Aikman. During Buck's run at Fox, he called 24 World Series and six Super Bowls.
Now that Fox has found its replacement for Buck, the question turns to who will replace Aikman as the color analyst in the No. 1 slot. Former All-Pro tight end and Burkhardt's previous partner Greg Olsen has been noted as a candidate, though the network has said it wants to explore every option.
Fox is also still looking for a replacement for their World Series broadcast, with Joe Davis and John Smoltz being the top candidates at the moment.
