(670 The Score) The Cubs have opened their spring training camp and will get pitchers and catchers to the practice field Wednesday in Mesa, Arizona. However, team president of baseball operations Theo Epstein indicated there still could be more additions.
As MLB free agency has lasted into February, many talented and valuable players remain on the open market. While the Cubs have made it clear they won't be a suitor for superstars Bryce Harper and Manny Machado, they're still looking at options to enhance their bullpen.
"We're still in touch with a lot of the free agents out there and their representatives," Epstein said Tuesday at spring training. "I'd say there's a possibility. We've been active lately in the reliever market. There have been some quality relievers out there in pretty affordable deals. There's always a chance that we're able to squeeze one more in to give Joe (Maddon) a number of quality options of depth.
"We'd love to be in a position where we can withstand a couple injuries in spring training and still put a really quality bullpen out there. That's one place where the market has been pretty soft and pretty slow developing, and we've been active. We'll stay in touch with everybody."
The Cubs' most notable addition in free agency has been utility infielder Daniel Descalso, who signed a two-year deal in December. The team recently added relievers Brad Brach and Tony Barnette on one-year contracts.
