(670 The Score) The White Sox have left prized prospect Nick Madrigal off their Opening Day roster.
Madgrial, 23, wasn't included on the team's 30-man roster to break camp, so he won't be with the White Sox when they host the Twins in their season opener at Guaranteed Rate Field on Friday. Madrigal was assigned to the team's alternate camp, which is working in Schaumburg.
Madrigal had performed well in summer camp, but as with any prospect, starting the service time clock is a consideration. If the White Sox wait a week or so to promote Madrigal, they'll have an extra year of contract control on the back end of his deal.
"He certainly much more looked the part over the last three weeks, to his credit," White Sox general manager Rick Hahn said Thursday afternoon. "He came in ready to compete. We still think the world of him and believe he's going to help us at some point over the course of this summer."
Leury Garcia and Danny Mendick are expected to split the duties at second base to open the season.
In some notable inclusions, right-hander Jimmy Lambert, right-hander Codi Heuer, catcher Zack Collins, outfielder Nicky Delmonico and infielder Cheslor Cuthbert made the team.
Right-hander Carson Fulmer, a first-round pick of the White Sox in 2015, was designated for assignment, and infielder Andrew Romine was released.
Along with Madrigal, first baseman Andrew Vaughn, catcher Yermin Mercedes, right-hander Drew Anderson, outfielder Luis Basabe, right-hander Dane Dunning, outfielder Luis Gonzalez, right-hander Tayron Guerrero and right-hander Tyler Johnson were assigned to Schaumburg.
Outfielder Ian Hamilton was officially optioned to Triple-A. The White Sox also signed infielder Ryan Goins, who will join the group in Schaumburg.
