(670 The Score) The White Sox and reliever Kelvin Herrera have reached an agreement on a two-year, $18-million deal, ESPN's Jeff Passan reported Monday afternoon. The deal includes a vesting option for a third season as well, according to the report.
Herrera, 29, has a career 2.82 ERA and 1.15 WHIP across eight MLB seasons. He had a 2.44 ERA and 1.20 WHIP in 48 games split between the Royals and Nationals in 2018 while also posting a 7.7 strikeout-per-nine-innings rate. Herrera spent his first 7 1/2 big league seasons in Kansas City before being traded to Washington ahead of the deadline last season.
An All-Star in 2015 and 2016, Herrera has closing experience, with 60 career saves. He had 17 saves in 2018, 14 of them with the Royals before primarily serving as a setup man for the Nationals.
It's unclear who the White Sox's closer will be, but Herrera will be expected to fill a high-leverage late-inning role. Chicago also acquired reliever Alex Colome from Seattle in late November, and he's a candidate for the closer's role as well.
