The team released a statement from head coach John Harbaugh who said he's proud of what he and Martindale were able to accomplish together and called it 'the right time' for Martindale to pursue other opportunities.

"After several productive conversations, Don and I have agreed to move forward in separate directions,” Harbaugh said. “We have had a great run on defense, and I am very proud of what has been accomplished and the work he has done. Don has been a major contributor to the success of our defense since 2012, and especially since he became defensive coordinator four years ago. He has done a great job. Now it is time to pursue other opportunities. Sometimes the moment comes, and it’s the right time. I am personally grateful for our friendship and for everything he has done in Baltimore.”

Despite the pleasantries from Harbaugh, the Ravens defense failed to secure wins in the biggest moments. The Ravens' bad defense can partially be the reason Baltimore fell into a six-game losing slump to close out the season.

To Martindale's credit, he was dealing with a battered defense, which was delt multiple injures in the secondary, losing three of four starters. However, in Martindale's first few years as d-coordinator, he had the Ravens defense consistently ranking in the top ten in the league. This season, they ranked 25th.

Harbaugh did not say whether the team will hire from within like they've done with all of the past coordinators under his regime or look outside to fill the position.
