The crash that left five-year-old Ariel Young critically injured has now left Britt Reid with a felony DWI charge.
Reid, the son of Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid and the team's former outside linebackers coach, was intoxicated when he got in a car crash just days before the Super Bowl, with prosecutors saying that he "operated a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, and acted with criminal negligence by driving at an excessive rate of speed," (via ESPN). A KCPD probable cause document stated that Reid's BAC two hours after the accident was 0.113 percent, which is a fair amount higher than the legal 0.08 percent limit (via 41 Action News).
A February statement from a police officer at the accident said that there was "a moderate odor of alcoholic beverages" and that Reid had bloodshot eyes at the time of the incident. Reid had also told police that he had "two or three drinks" around the time of the accident.
If convicted of a felony DWI, Reid would face a maximum seven-year prison sentence (via ESPN).
Young, who was seriously injured and entered a coma after the accident, has since awakened and is "getting a little better each day," according to an update from her family on her GoFundMe page. The GoFundMe, which had raised over $250,000 by the time the Super Bowl was over just three days after the crash, has continued to receive a lot of support, passing its goal of $500,000 and continuing to grow.
“The Kansas City Chiefs organization remains steadfast in our concern for all who have been impacted by this tragic accident,” said a statement from the Chiefs on Monday. “Our prayers are focused on Ariel’s continued healing and recovery. The Chiefs are regularly in contact with the family’s designated representative during this challenging time.”
Reid is no longer employed by the Kansas City Chiefs, and prosecutors have requested a $100,000 bond and that Reid be placed on GPS and alcohol monitoring, according to a press release from the Jackson County Prosecutor website.
