The Washington Capitals re-signed defenseman Nick Jensen to a three-year contract extension, the team announced this week.
Jensen, 32, will earn an average annual value of $4.05 million on his new deal.
He's recorded a career-high 24 points (2 goals, 22 assists) in 62 games for the Capitals this season, the second-straight year that he's recorded a career high in points. He recorded 21 points on five goals and 16 assists in 76 games in 2021-22. Jensen's 24 points rank second among Capitals defensemen.
Jensen leads the Capitals in ice time and ranks third on the team in ice time per game (20:58). He also ranks second on the team in shorthanded ice time per game (2:31) and blocked shots (110).
As of Wednesday morning, Jensen was one of just three Capitals skaters to appear in all 62 of the team's games this season. However, Jensen left Wednesday night's game against the Anaheim Ducks with an upper body injury after just over two minutes of ice time and did not return. The Capitals went on to win the game 3-2 in overtime.
The Caps first acquired Jensen in a Feb. 2019 trade with the Detroit Red Wings and immediately signed him to a four-year extension. Jensen was selected by Detroit in the fifth round (150th overall) in the 2009 NHL Draft.
The Caps announced on Thursday they've signed 25-year-old forward Ethen Frank to a one-year, two-way contract ($750,000/$205,000) for the 2023-24 season. Frank has recorded 41 points (24 goals, 17 assists) in 45 games with the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL) this season.
The Caps have been highly active ahead of the NHL Trade Deadline, which arrives Friday, March 3 at 3 p.m. ET., notably trading away Lars Eller, Marcus Johansson, Dmitry Orlov and Garnet Hathaway.
