Capitals sign goaltender Logan Thompson to six-year, $35.1 million extension

Logan Thompson has been a revelation for the Capitals in net – and now, he’ll be here for a long time.

On Monday, the Capitals and the netminder agreed to a six-year, $35.1 million contract that will kick in next season, keeping the 27-year-old in DC for the long haul.

"We got it done pretty quick and finalized it this morning," Thompson told NHL.com after signing the extension. "Really happy to be here for many more years to come. Love my time here and just thankful for the opportunity that the Capitals gave me."

"Really happy for him and proud of him and what he's done this year, and the impression he's made on the organization and how well he's played," Capitals coach Spencer Carbery said during media availability Monday. "Chucky and LT have played excellent and they're a big reason why we sit where we do in the standings. We'd love to keep both guys for as long as we possibly can, and now that LT is locked up, that's good for the organization and good for our team."

The Caps acquired Thompson from Vegas in June for a pair of draft picks, and he started the season in a rotation with Charlie Lindgren as 1A and 1B in net. However, with Lindgren sidelined by injury earlier this month, Thompson started or played the majority of seven straight games, going 6-0-1 – the only loss an OT loss in relief of Lindgren when he was hurt – and allowing just eight goals in those seven games.

Thompson earned the league’s No. 1 star for the week ending Jan. 19, when he was 3-0-0 with those two shutouts, and he is third in the NHL in wins at 22-2-3. He is also, among goalies with at least 16 games played, second with a 2.09 GAA and third with a .925 save percentage.

"We are pleased to sign Logan to a multiyear contract," Capitals general manager Chris Patrick said in the team’s release announcing the move. "Logan has demonstrated that he is one of the top goaltenders in the NHL this season and since he joined the League. With his size and exceptional athleticism, we are confident that this signing will enhance one of the most critical positions on our team, especially as he enters the prime years of his career."

Thompson and Lindgren, who himself is potentially an unrestricted free agent this offseason, have combined to give the Caps an NHL-best 2.34 GAA and league best-tying .913 save percentage this year.
