The Capitals social media team had some fun at the expense of a TNT broadcaster after Alex Ovechkin moved to within 10 goals of breaking Wayne Gretzky’s record.

Just minutes into Wednesday night’s game against the Rangers, Darren Pang referred to Ovechkin as a player who has been a “one trick pony” throughout his career, a comment that quickly made waves on social media among hockey fans, with many of them ripping the take from Pang considering Ovechkin’s chase for arguably the most coveted career accolade in the sport.

Midway through the third period, Ovechkin fired home a game-tying power play goal, putting him just 10 goals away from surpassing Gretzky, and the Caps X account posted “One trick pony scores his 885th career goal and records his 1,599th career point,” an obvious dig at Pang’s remark two periods earlier.

It’s hard to consider the future all-time scoring leader as a “one trick pony,” especially since Ovechkin has led the league in goals nine times, even strength goals four times, and power play goals six times, while also owning a Stanley Cup, a Conn Smythe Trophy, three Hart Trophies, and a Calder Trophy.
