Connor McMichael and Tom Wilson both scored in the Capitals’ 4-1 win over the Red Wings Tuesday night, giving them 24 and 30 goals on the season, respectively.
In a year where much focus is on Alex Ovechkin needing 41 to tie and 42 to break Gretzky’s all-time record, well, if you told Spencer Carbery back in October that McMichael and Aliaksei Protas – who tallied 24 goals total between them last year – would have 53 total this year in mid-March and both be in the Top 4 on the team, he wouldn’t have believed you.
Truly, the scoring punch has come up and down the lineup, as seven players are at 18 or more so far (with an outside chance of four 30-goal scorers), but Tom Wilson already six above his career high and on pace to possibly double last season’s output of 18 might be the most welcome surprise.
