Darren Pang: Capitals' best chance to beat Hurricanes is winning the battle 'in the trenches'

Darren Pang was the one who called Alex Ovechkin a ‘one-trick pony’ when it came to Ovi breaking the all-time NHL goals record.

Well, when Panger visited Chris Russell on Friday to talk Caps-Hurricanes, he noted that Washington’s team is going to have to be more than that, and the series can be won in the nitty gritty.

And, as others have said, the fact that Washington has four lines that can roll and be the stars, and three dangerous defensive pairings, means they have the depth to keep up with Carolina’s, and their versatility could be a key to the series, too.

“You’ve got home ice, so you’ll get the matchups there, and get the physicality – but the structure of Washington is really good. They’re always on the defensive side of the puck, and they don’t chase hits,” Pang said. “And the other thing is versatility. Like, does Protas continue to get healthier and stronger and end up back with Strome and Ovechkin, and maybe Beauvillier moves down a bit?”
