CFP Rankings: Michigan, USC on the rise, Ohio State odd team out

By , Audacy

The College Football Playoff rankings saw a bit of a shake up after the final week of the regular season and things are far from finished.

The Georgia Bulldogs hold onto the No. 1 spot despite Michigan's impressive victory over Ohio State on the road this weekend. The Wolverines instead slide up to the No. 2 spot, replacing the Buckeyes.

Meanwhile, TCU moves up to the No. 3 spot after completing its undefeated regular season (12-0) and the USC Trojans crack the top four for the first time all season after a decisive victory over Notre Dame.

Ohio State’s loss to Michigan dropped them to No. 5, but still have hope to move back up while Alabama still lurks around the playoff picture at No. 6.

LSU, previously No. 5, fell all the way outside of the top 10 after a brutal loss to the unranked Texas A&M.

While the Tigers’ championship hopes have been crushed, LSU is still slated to play Georgia in the SEC Championship Game on Saturday and if they beat the Bulldogs, things could get interesting.

It would give SEC two 2-loss teams in Alabama and Georgia, with 3-loss LSU, which beat Alabama, as the conference winner.

That would certainly muddy things up a bit, with Georgia most likely sliding out of the No. 1 spot (should Michigan take care of business vs Purdue in the Big Ten Championship). But things could get even messier should USC lose the Pac-12 Championship Game to Utah or TCU fall to Kansas in the Big 12 Championship Game.

Such a scenario would likely open the door for Ohio State to slide back into the top four while Alabama could even find its way back in as well.

The bottom line: this playoff picture is far from settled and the slate of championship games on Saturday will have major implications.
