We’ve heard Kevin Willard called a ‘snake,’ a ‘weasel,’ and a ‘thief in the night’ on our Audacy DC airwaves over the last week, but Chick Hernandez brought it to new depths on Tuesday.
Joining Chris Russell to talk about the NFL Annual Meetings and other topics, Hernandez, who is a Terps alum, was asked by the Rooster his thoughts on the Buzz Williams hire that had just broken not long before, and, well – amoebas and invertebrates everywhere, you have some company.
That was enough of the talk about Willard, at least for a few minutes until Chick called him ‘a basketball snob’ after Rooster mentioned that Buzz Williams is coming from a school where football very clearly is King, something that irked Willard:
“He’s a proven winner, a motivational guy, and a leader of young men, which is not something we’ve had the last three years at Maryland,” Hernandez said. “He has shared the wealth with football at Texas A&M and Virginia Tech, so he's used to that – he’s not a basketball snob like Willard, who flat out lied to everybody, even his own team, who found out via Zoom that he wasn't gonna be the coach. I mean, how weak can you be? You're supposed to be the leader of young men? I would never advise anybody under me to act that way, and that’s the example he just set for all those guys. It’s absolute BS.”
And this, it seems, will be the lasting legacy of Willard to Hernandez: declining to answer a question after a tournament game because Hernandez wasn’t actually in the building?
“He went on this diatribe about, I can't even keep my team in New York for an extra day at Christmas, we don't have the money,” Hernandez said, “and the next night he wins the game and I've joined the press conference via Zoom, and I asked a question and his response is, ‘Chick, I don't think I should answer that question because you're not here.’ You know why, Coach? We couldn't afford to be in Seattle for that long! We've done a lot of stuff through the year with the Commanders, and Ovi, and everything else, we don't have the money to do it, so I couldn't be there. But guess what? I'm via Zoom, I’m asking you a pertinent question, and you decided to take a dump on me. Well, have fun with yourself, sir.”
