Jeff Ermann: 'Wouldn't surprise' if Kevin Willard accepted Villanova job days, if not weeks, ago

If you harken back to JP Finlay’s rant about Kevin Willard after he took a visit to College Park last Thursday night before the Sweet 16, the one word you might remember (besides weasel) is ‘WEEKS!’ – as in, how long Willard’s dalliance with Villanova had been going on.

Terps insider Jeff Ermann joined The Junkies on Monday now that Willard’s exit is official, and, yeah – seems like that may have indeed been the case.

So here’s the big question now, after a 50-year pre-Willard span where the Terps had just four coaches: is this job now a stepping stone and possibly a revolving door, or can it be stabilized?

“A lot of people say that it's a stepping stone, but I don't think it is. I think that has more to do with whoever's running the place,” Ermann said. “It’s very obvious at this point that Damon Evans just didn't do a good job of being an athletic director. He made two consecutive hires who quit during the season, and gave out some bad contracts; it's all about organizational structure, and they haven't had that. The athletic department has failed, and so I think it's more of a result of who's running the show. If you get the right athletic director and they hire the right people, then you're more likely to be able to retain talent, but when you're kind of a mess in any business, you're not going to retain talent.”
