(670 The Score) White Sox reliever Joe Kelly had a succinct description of Yankees third baseman Josh Donaldson on Monday, two days after Donaldson called Chicago shortstop Tim Anderson “Jackie” Robinson, a remark that Anderson felt was disrespectful and which manager Tony La Russa called “racist.”

“The guy is a douche,” Kelly said of Donaldson during an interview on the Parkins & Spiegel Show on 670 The Score.

Donaldson made the comment to Anderson during the Yankees’ 7-5 win against the White Sox on Saturday in New York, and the it led to the benches clearing. Donaldson later explained that his “Jackie” comment to Anderson was a joke and a reference to Anderson referring to himself as a modern-day Jackie Robinson in a Sports Illustrated article in 2019, but Anderson and the White Sox didn’t buy it. Donaldson has had a contentious relationship with the White Sox, who felt Donaldson’s comment was rooted in malice.

“That’s bad,” Kelly said. “That’s horrible. That’s not tolerated in any kind of sport … Whatever it is, it wasn’t for good intentions.

“Whatever he’s saying, they’re not friends. I am half-Mexican. I have plenty of African-American friends, but I would never even say that to my friends that are my boys.”

Kelly added that Donaldson’s comment was “100%” in line with the reputation he carries.

“I guess if you put up numbers, you get to stay,” Kelly said of Donaldson. “If you perform, it doesn’t matter.”

During Kelly's interview on the Parkins & Spiegel Show on Monday afternoon, news broke that Donaldson had been suspended one game for his comment.

Donaldson has had several run-ins with the White Sox in recent years. While with the Twins in 2021, Donaldson had a parking lot confrontation with White Sox ace Lucas Giolito. And in the Yankees’ win against the White Sox on May 13, Donaldson gave Anderson a hard tag and push off third base on a close play. Anderson responded by shoving Donaldson as the two exchanged words.
