Why is this NFL schedule, unlike all other NFL schedules? Because in all other years, there was only one game on each Monday Night Football night, but in this year we will get two. Twice as many?
To go over all of the ins and outs and new quirks of the 2023 NFL season's schedule (ahead of its official release later on Thursday), John Ourand joined The Kevin Sheehan Show to break down the new Monday Night Football plans, the flexing of Monday night games at the end of the season, the end of the Fox - NFC and CBS - AFC marriage, and the league's plans for Christmas.
"Christmas Day is on a Monday this year and the NFL is gonna come out with a triple-header," Ourand tells Kevin Sheehan. "There's gonna be three [weeks] where there is gonna be Monday Night Football on ABC and Monday Night Football on ESPN that are side-by-side. Three weeks were you have two games side-by-side, not one game simulcast on both [networks like in years past].
"Monday Night Football this year is gonna have flexible scheduling in Weeks 12 - 17. So fans that buy a ticket for Sunday afternoon could find out that that ticket is for Monday night and they'll only have a 12-day notice."
That means that fans could be left in the lurch if they are planning on traveling to any away games toward the end of the season as games could be moved by as many as 31 hours on less than two weeks' notice.
The plan is to avoid a horrific matchup toward the end of the season with two terrible teams.
