Chris Simms thinks the most overrated quarterback in football is…Jalen Hurts?
Indeed, Simms said on a recent podcast he ‘respects a lot about Hurts,’ but feel he’s the most overrated player in football because he has ‘an All-Star team with the best O-line in football and maybe the best duo at receiver in all of football.’
“Yeah, but this is the same guy who a few years ago couldn't stop raving about how great Kellen Mond was and what a great pick that was for the Vikings,” Cakes said after they played the audio. “And, we've seen Kellen Mond hop around to different teams and kind of fizzle out.”
“I think it's easy to say he's the most overrated based on how he played the last six weeks of the season and in the playoffs – he was hurt, but he played terrible,” Bish replied. “But was Chris Simms saying this last year when the kid was leading the team to the Super Bowl? And by the way, did you know Hurts had 18 rushing touchdowns last year if you include the playoffs? So was Simms saying all this then?”
“I think it depends on where you believe he's rated; to say somebody is overrated or underrated, you have to figure what is the consensus, and maybe he thinks the consensus is higher,” JP came back. “I don't really hear many people put Jalen Hurts in the same class as Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, and Lamar Jackson; maybe he was creeping up there, but I feel like Mahomes and Allen are 1-2 and maybe throw in Joe Burrow and Jackson, those are the top guys, and then there's kind of the best of the rest.”
Maybe Hurts is the top of the second tier, but 2023 was a lot different than 2022.
“His passing numbers were down this year; he had more touchdowns because of the Tush Push, but his interceptions went way up, and the team was on a horrendous losing streak at the end of the year,” JP said. “There was a story yesterday that Nick Sirianni was getting in arguments with the players left and right because they missed that security guard Big Dom on the sidelines. But I think he's properly rated.”
“If you’re gonna defend Hurts, I’m gonna defend Brock Purdy, who had a great team around him and had more touchdowns and fewer interceptions than Mahomes, who led the league in QBR,” EB said. “Purdy doesn't have that running, but he's a capable runner.”
And on last shot from Cakes, to Bish's original point: "If you polled the other 31 GMs, like 25 of them would probably take Hurts over their current QB."
