It’s another Feinstein Friday for the Sports Junkies, poor air quality edition (as evidenced by Drab & Valdez playing “We Didn’t Start the Fire” entering the segment)!
On this week’s hit, John Feinstein of course had to go in-depth on the PGA Tour/LIV Golf merger, something that he saw coming…but not this soon.
“I said to you guys that we thought a merger of some kind was inevitable down the road, the way the NFL and AFL, NHL and WHA, and NBA and ABA merged,” Feinstein said. “But now, complete surrender from the PGA Tour? I don’t think anyone expected it, and I don’t understand why Jay Monahan folded his tent so quickly; unless his lawyers said they don’t want to go to court because they’re a 501(c)(6) and don’t want their books opened fully in discovery…and so now, the commissioner of golf is Mohammed bin Salman.”
Was it that the PGA Tour was indeed cash-strapped, and as EB said, LIV was ready to “bleed them to death” in court?
“That’s why we all thought a merger was inevitable, because the Saudis were never going to run out of money,” Feinstein said. “The tour has done very well financially in recent years, which is why they were able to raise purses; they weren’t exactly to go out of business without this happening, so I don’t understand why Monahan would throw in the towel completely.”
It’s unlikely to have two separate tours under one umbrella, based on current structures, so what you have, in Feinstein’s eyes, is “a lot of spin” because they don’t know what golf will look like next year – mostly because if players can choose events, LIV and it’s shorter events and biggest purses would win out every time.
“You have to think about what Monahan is trying to say here – I was embarrassed for him watching his Golf Channel interview because he was so flustered, he could barely get a sentence out,” Feinstein said. “And the most embarrassing thing about this was Bryson DeCahmbeau saying on CNN that everyone makes mistakes talking about the murderous regime of the Saudis.”
The one good thing that could come out of this, at least personally for Feinstein?
“NBC or CBS is going to go and try David Feherty, because they miss him, and no one is watching the LIV telecasts,” Feinstein said. “As long as he still gets the money he’s contractually due to be paid, I think he’s go work for them in a heartbeat.”
