For the first time in a long time, Giants fans have something to be happy about.
Yet, Fox Sports announcer Mark Schlereth seemed to put a real stink on things.
Schlereth, who called Sunday’s 17-12 Giants road win over the Seahawks, logged onto Twitter following the game and spent part of his Sunday night and Monday morning engaging in back-and-forth with Giants fans, which seemed to turn slightly antagonistic.
It appeared to begin when Schlereth, unsolicited, quote tweeted an observation Giants beat reporter Art Stapleton made about a play when Seahawks receiver DK Metcalf face-planted Giants cornerback James Bradberry. Stapleton pointed out how Bradberry still managed to make the tackle while going for the football.
Schlereth quote tweeted this with, “You gonna cry?”
The unprovoked attack confused many fans, and Stapleton, who responded to Schlereth to show some class and professional respect.
Schlereth did not respond directly to Stapleton, but it appeared as if he took exception to the fact that Bradberry “almost” stripped the ball on the play based on tweets he exchanged with fans.
Schlereth also took time to defend Marc Colombo, the offensive line coach whom the Giants fired after a verbal altercation with Joe Judge – albeit, Schlereth was responding to Giants fans who falsely stated Judge took over o-line duties – and mocked Giants fans for acting like they won the Super Bowl.
Schlereth seemed to embrace the hate tweets he was getting and justified his unprovoked attack on Stapleton as “responding to my timeline” even though he was not tagged in the tweet.
It was certainly an odd exchange in the Giants Twitterverse, one that many fans are still trying to wrap their heads around.
